Song Notes

The story of a busted guitar,
one bird, and a big ass full moon.

This song was written August of 2001 in the Minnesota Boundary Waters Canoe Area. No phone, no lights, no damn billboards or car horns. It's an incredibly beautiful, peaceful, and quiet place. Not another living soul for miles.

I trudged my guitar in, sans the case, up, over and through 18 miles of canoeing and hiking terrain. It definitely took a beating. The guitar actually broke the day I was recording Gone Fishin'. The treatment it received on this trip, no doubt set its fate. I went ahead and used it on the record anyways, after all it gave of its self for the greater good. It would have wanted it that way. If you listen closely you will notice the main acoustic guitar, coming in and out of tune.

--

11:30pm, August 21, 90 degree's, an extra large full moon settles just over the water. There's no need for a fire, it was hotter than I ever remember. No need for a flash light, the moon took care of that. Moon shadows, oh they were everywhere. I sat perched, up over the water, on my very own 20 ton boulder.

Off in the distance my brothers canoe passes through the moonlights watery reflection. The water cracks and shimmers. The tree's bounce in their wonder of the moment. I hear my brothers talking quietly, about what I don't know. The silence of the night broken only by the occasional wizzzz of last cast into the night... splash. Off in the distance I hear a Loons call.

I grab my guitar, hit a C chord, and the song takes flight.
"The moonlight shines so hard, off the lake up there..."

Gone Fishin

Lyrics

Hang a sign out on my door, gone fishin till Tuesday
Leaving all my cares behind, who needs em, anyway

The moonlight shines so hard, off the lake up there
Hearing all the Loons a callin, out to, to their mate

Gone Fishin', to the weekend, its tuesday

Gone all the city noises
Gone all of life's cares
Give me just a couple of days
and I'll come back to you my dear

I've Gone Fishin', to the weekend,
Gone Fishin', doing some livin,
Gone Fishin', doing some livin,
its Tuesday

Alternate Chorus

A version with the original chorus.

This is the original chorus that was written deep in the woods. This is a rough take, still fleshing out the tune. By the by - the BWCA stands for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.
